When confronting your erosion problems, many types of solutions are available; however, the Vetiver System has advantages over all other methods of erosion control.

What is Vetiver Grass?Vetiver, Vetiveria zizanioides, (recently reclassified
as Chrysopogon zizanioides), is a type of grass
with very unique characteristics that is effectively
used in soil/slope stabilization, flood control,
land slide stabilization, land rehabilitation,
as well as many other applications. It forms a
dense clump of shoots above the surface and grows
a thick and seemingly impenetrable web of roots
that delves 13 feet (4 meters) straight into the
ground. The roots essentially form a wall of steel
that prevents erosion-prone slopes from slipping
away while the thick hedge that grows above ground
controls sediment flows. This provides excellent
protection against soil deterioration. Vetiver
is an extremely hardy plant that can be used in
most climates, but yields fastest root growth in
areas such as the Southern and Southwestern states,
and California that have a Mediterranean type climate
where there are hot summers and temperate winters. |

Australia - This farm reservoir was very badly constructed. A narrow line of vetiver was planted along the top of the wall, at the time of breaching the earth wall below the vetiver was not washed out. The breach occured where the vetiver had not been planted. Note the thick and massive vetiver root system that has prevented wash out. The roots reach right down to the bottom of the photo.
Photo 1 - Here the vetiver, planted in close rows across the spillway reduces the velocity and power of water passing down this spillway
Photo 2 - Australia - Just after the fire. Note the immediate regrowth.
Photo 3 - Australia - 2 months after the fire. The Vetiver will soon be back to its full strength and size. |
